Who are the winners and losers of the 2025-2026 NBA trade deadline?
The NBA trade deadline came and went with chaos surrounding the league. Former All-Stars and key role players are moved to various contenders and rebuilding teams. Like with every trade deadline, there were winners and losers throughout the league. Winners of the NBA trade deadline include the Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Washington Wizards, and the Utah Jazz. The Celtics were able to upgrade the center position by acquiring former multi-All-Star Nikola Vucevic from the Chicago Bulls. The Cleveland Cavaliers did a multi-All-Star for All-Star swap by acquiring James Harden for Darius Garland. Both moves by the Celtics and Cavaliers increase their championship odds for the 2025-2026 season. The Washington Wizards traded for former multi-All-Star Anthony Davis in a scary dump from the Dallas Mavericks. The Utah Jazz followed the same path by acquiring former multi-All-Star Jarren Jackson Jr. from the Memphis Grizzlies. The Wizards and Jazz made moves that made it clear that their rebuilds are nearing the finish line. The 2026-2027 season will be dedicated to playoff contention for both current rebuilding teams. Losers of the NBA trade deadline include the Milwaukee Bucks, Houston Rockets, Golden State Warriors, and Dallas Mavericks. The Milwaukee Bucks held on to All-Star Giannis Antetokompo at the deadline after months of trade request speculation. The Bucks took offers from several contenders and decided to wait until the offseason for a decision on Giannis's future. The Bucks will now finish their season with Giannis on the roster, with a chance to add a top lottery pick from the next NBA draft. While it's unknown what type of haul was offered to the Bucks, it is best believed it would have ended the delay of the inevitable. The Houston Rockets stood pat at the trade deadline. They were in need of a point guard and backup center but passed on the opportunity to add at the deadline. They can still add an impactful player through the buyout market, but it will not lead to the same effective outcome as making a trade. The Golden State Warriors traded role players Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield for former All-Star Kristaps Porzingis from the Atlanta Hawks. The Warriors had lost former multi-All-Star Jimmy Butler to a torn Achilles in the month of January. They needed a replacement and were unable to trade for a highly impacted player. Porzingis can make a difference, but his inability to play games due to illness and injuries has become a major problem in his NBA career. Lastly, the Dallas Mavericks cut their losses by trading former multi-All-Star Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards. Anthony Davis was the biggest name acquired one year ago when the Dallas Mavericks traded away All-Star Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. The trade that continues to age poorly one year later. Now the Mavericks are in a complete rebuild, building around rising star Cooper Flagg. The Davis trade opens the door for financial flexibility, as the Mavericks were able to salary dump Davis's expensive contract to Washington. So what will the outcome be—more of the named winners and losers? Were there other teams unmentioned following the deadline? A lot could happen in the next two months leading up to the NBA Playoffs.
