Who are the winners and losers of the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade?

After months of speculation and anticipation, the Milwaukee Bucks have finally traded franchise icon and future Hall of Famer Giannis Antetokounmpo. Giannis alongside backup center Bobby Portis, are heading to the Miami Heat in a blockbuster trade including 4 players and multiple draft picks. The Bucks will receive Heat All-Star Tyler Herro, alongside key role players Jaime Jaquez Jr, Kel'el Ware and Kasparas Jakucionis. Like with any trade in sports, there are always winners and losers. In the short-term, it is only right to consider the Miami Heat the biggest winner. The Heat gets their new face of their franchise by acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Heat, who have spent many years finishing the regular season in the Play-In Tournament, changed their playoff ceiling and now have the ability to compete for championships in the near future. The addition of Bobby Portis is a bonus, as he will provide value as a scoring big man off the bench. The Heat will not enter the 2026-2027 season as favorites to win a championship, but they will be in the conversation as a championship contender in a stacked Eastern Conference. The Milwaukee Bucks are not winners of the trade yet, but the possibility of being winners will be determined in the future. They used two of the draft picks acquired in the trade to draft prospects Brayden Burries and Nate Ament. It will take time to determine what these two first round picks become in a competitive league. The development of Ware, Jaquez Jr. and Jakucionis will also be a question mark going forward. They will need to take steps in their player development to accelerate the Bucks rebuild. As for Tyler Herro, who is a proven All-Star, he will have an opportunity to lead his hometown Bucks through a lengthy rebuild through trial and error. Last, it has become clear that the Boston Celtics are the actual losers of the trade. The Celtics had made it publicly known that they were putting their franchise star Jaylen Brown on the trade block. The Celtics' failure to acquire Giannis could cost them Jaylen Brown in the process. In a league full of player empowerment, it is best believed that Brown may force his way out of Boston and find a new team to call home. Brown led the Celtics to the number 2 seed in what was originally considered a gap year. It is clear that Brown is considered the scapegoat following the Celtics' blown 3-1 series lead in the first round of the 2026 playoffs. Brown had previously acknowledged that the 2025-2026 season was his favorite year of his career after getting the opportunity to be the number one scoring option while Jayson Tatum rehabbed. So who are the winners and losers of the Giannis trade? What will the aftermath be following the trade? A trade isn't truly measured until a year or two has passed when fully analyzing it. This is a trade that will be measured in due time.
