Which rebuilding NBA teams have the most to prove in the 2026-2027 season?

In the NBA there are teams in different stages of their building cycles. There are teams in win-now mode. The teams that are built to win a championship and compete on a nightly basis. There are teams that are middle of the pack. The teams that are built to strictly make the playoffs with the goal of winning a playoff round or two. Last but not importantly, there are the rebuilding teams. Teams that are young and up & coming. The teams that are just learning how to win and compete. In late May, the NBA passed a new lottery system called the 3-2-1 Lottery. The new system would flattening out the lottery odds and punish the three worst teams in the league. A system created with the one goal in mind: to eliminate league wide tanking. This new system would be utilized to movate all teams to compete on a nightly occurance. A move that would change the way of roster construction. Teams can not be built poorly with the intension to lose. Making the NBA Play In Tournament has now become a priority to teams through out the league, including many of the rebuilding teams. With that said, it is time to analyize several rebuilding teams with the most to prove. Begining with the eastern conference, it makes the most sense to deep dive into the Washington Wizards. The Wizards have not made the NBA playoffs since the 2020-2021 season where they were previously led by former stars Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook. A lot has changed during the last 5 years including the trades for former stars Trae Young and Anthony Davis, and the drafting of number 1 pick, Aj Dybansta. The Wizards have spent much of the last three seasons developing young players including: Bub Carrington, Bilal Coulibaly, Keyshawn George, Trey Johnson, Will Riley and Alex Sarr. The development stage has passed and the competing stage is on the way. The Wizards will get a lot of attention this upcoming season with the debut of Aj Dybansta, the number 1 pick of the 2026 NBA draft and a favorite to win rookie of the year. Anthony Davis and Trae Ylung will also have an opportinity to revive their former all-star careers back to stardom. The Chicago Bulls are also a rebuilding team worth monitoring  next season. The Bulls had not made the playoffs since the 2021-2022 season and will enter next season with a lot of upside and youth. They will see the debut of rookie Caleb Wilson, the number 4 pick of the 2026 NBA draft and the arguably the best player of the 2026 NBA Summer League. The Bulls will also see their new addition of former all-star Norman Powell and big man Nic Claxton make their Bulls debut after a active offseason. They have a lot of young talent on the rise with the development of Matas Buzelis, Rob Dillingham, Noa Essengue and Josh Giddy. The Bulls had made the Play-In Tournament from 2023 to 2024, while missing the tournament last season. The Bulls have the talent to get back to the Play-In Tournament with a chance to complete an upset in the process. Last in the Eastern Conference, theres the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets have not made that playoffs since the 2022-2023 season and will look to end that drought in the near future. The Nets have yet to discover their identity following the trades of stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in 2023. The Nets are projected to be the youngest team in the league and that will be displayed all season, as they will see the debut of Mikel Brown Jr, the number 6 pick and future pointguard of the Nets franchise. The Nets will develope Brown, a long with second year players Egor Demin, Nolan Traore, Danny Wolf, Drake Powell and Ben Saraf. The youth will be a focus but there is also the veteran talent of champion Michael Porter Jr and former multi all-star Julius Randle. Randle was traded to the nets from the Minestota Timberwolves as a salary dump but he is the Nets competitive floor raiser. The Nets do not own their draft pick next season so there will be no insentive to tank their season. Randle and Porter Jr. will see the greenlight in leading their young squad at a chance of advancement. The Nets may not make the Playoffs in a stacked Eastern Conference but making in the Play-in Tournmant is achievable. Now focusing on the Western Conference, the Utah Jazz are the first rebuilding team with a lot to uncover. The Jazz have not made the playoffs since the 2021-2022 NBA season, when they were previously led by stars Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert. The days of Mitchell and Gobert are long gone and a new competitive era has begun. The Jazz will see the debut of Darryn Peterson, the number 2 pick of the 2026 NBA draft and another favorite to win rookie of the year. The Jazz will also see former all-stars Lauri Markkann and Jarren Jackson Jr. team up as part of dominant Jazz front court. The development of young players Ace Bailey, Isaiah Collier, Kyle Flipowski, Keyonte Gorge and Bryce Sensabaugh will be key to Utah’s contention process. The Jazz have come a long way from where they were following the trades of Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert 4 years ago and now they are ready to contend for the playoffs. The Dallas Mavericks are another rebuilding team looking to bounce back in year 2 of the Cooper Flagg era. The Mavericks are still in the process of recovering following the departure of former face of the franchise Luka Doncic. The Mavericks made the NBA finals in 2024 and have seen their playoff and championship hopes fall apart since. The Mavs will hope for a year 2 leap from their rising star and recent Rookie of the Year, Cooper Flagg. Flagg will gain some help in competing for the playoffs as the Mavericks will see the return of former 9-time all-star Kyrie Irving. Irving had missed all of the 2025-2026 season following recovery of his torn achilies back in February 2025. The duo of Flagg and Irving along the supporting cast of P.J. Washington, Derek Lively, and newly acquired Santi Aldama could lead the Mavericks back towards playoff contention. Lastly in the West, theres the New Orleans Pelicans. The Pelicans were one of the most promising teams in the NBA from 2022 to 2024. They last made the playoffs in 2024 and have been hurt by injuries back to back seasons since. Injuries to former all-stars Zion Williamson and Dejounte Murray have ruined the Pelicans recent seasons. Past injuries aside, there is still a lot of young and promising talent in New Orleans. The Pelicans will continue developing 2025 draft picks Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen. They will look for a potential all-star leaps in forwards Trey Murphy and Sadiq Bay. As disappointing as last season was for the Pelicans, the talent is clearly there for the Pelicans to get back in the playoff picture if the team can stay health and build on team development. So which rebuilding in NBA team will shock the league? Can any of these teams improve from their previous season? The rebuilding process can be long and on-going. When progress is made, its a step in the right direction and avoid staying in purgatory.
