Where will the Western Conference run through in the 2026-2027 NBA Season?

The NBA recently began revealing the upcoming schedule for the 2026-2027 season. As the offseason took shape, there were surprising and unsurprising opening night match-ups announced. To the surprise of many, there were 3 games announced to begin the NBA season. Those match-ups include the Detroit Pistons vs the Boston Celtics, the Philadelphia 76ers vs the defending champion New York Knicks, and the Oklahoma City Thunder vs the San Antonio Spurs. Seeing the Thunder Vs Spurs announcement has made it become more clear who the front-runners of the Western Conference are. It creates a debate on the question: who is the team to beat in the Western Conference? With that question asked, it is time to analyze the two leading contenders and make a case for each team’s championship odds. Beginning with the Oklahoma City Thunder, who fell short of going back to the NBA finals in consecutive seasons. The Thunder will enter the 2026-2027 season with the majority of their 2025 championship core. They look to bounce back following a playoff run that ended in 7 games to their rival San Antonio Spurs. The Thunder have shown their ability to dominate the regular season, winning 64 games last season and 68 games in their championship season. They have the reigning back-to-back NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, along with former all-stars Jaylen Williams and Chet Holgram. They also have one of the best young supporting cast of role players, including Jared Mccane, Cason Wallace, Isiah Hartenstein, and Ajay Mitchell. The three stars have an opportunity to run through the NBA as a dominant big 3. Their championship experience will be key for them to navigate their Thunder to its second championship in three seasons. Injury luck was not kind to the Thunder, as the team missed star Jaylen Williams and key role player Ajay Mitchell during the Western Conference Finals. Those injuries were pivotal as the Thunder struggled to score against the Spurs after going up 3 wins to 2, losing in 7 games, including 2 blowout losses on the road. Next season is a new season and, with better health, the Oklahoma City Thunder have all the optimism for a run at another title. The San Antonio Spurs, who eliminated the Thunder, are a different case and story. The Spurs enter the 2026-2027 NBA season as the defending Western Conference Champions. They were no match against the NBA Champion Knicks, but that does not discredit them because of their surprising finals run. The Spurs shocked the NBA last season, winning a total of 62 games, eliminating the defending 2025 champion Oklahoma City Thunder while advancing to the 2026 NBA Finals. The Spurs, led by All-Stars Victor Wembanyama and D’Aaron Foxx, lost in 5 games to the New York Knicks, while leading 75% of the championship games. The Spurs learned a lot of lessons and gained a lot of development along the way to the NBA Finals. They fell 3 wins short of a title, but their championship experience will only make them stronger and hungrier for success. That success will hinge on the growth of rising stars Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper. Devin Vassell and Julian Champennie must also show promise as high-quality role players, along with the addition of Tobias Harris. The Spurs should have all the confidence in the world towards getting back to the NBA finals. They proved a lot of people wrong as a young and inexperienced team, and it should not be surprising if they continue to surprise the media and league next season, as the Spurs aim to win their first championship in the Victor Wembanyama era and in general since 2014. So where does the Western Conference run through? Will the Spurs and Thunder continue their dominance as the favorites to win the Western Conference? October 20th will be a night to remember in the NBA and the Thunders Vs Spurs is an intriguing match up to kick off the 2026-2027 season.
