Which NBA contenders face make or break 2026-2027 seasons?
In sports there are always key takeaways when analyzing a team's season and playoff run. Teams enter new seasons with goals and ambitions. From contending teams to rebuilding teams, there are always expectations. When expectations are reached, it's often considered a success. When expectations aren't accomplished, it is considered a failure. With all this mentioned, it is time to analyze the contending NBA teams entering a make or break 2026-2027 season. Starting with the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference, who will try to bounce back following a 19-win 2025-2026 season. The Pacers entered last season as the defending Eastern Conference Champions. They were coming off of an incredible 2025 playoff run, where they were 1 win shy of an NBA championship. The Pacers fell short against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2025 NBA Finals and lost their star point guard Tyrese Haliburton to injury in the process. Halliburton missed the entire 2025-2026 season while recovering from a torn Achilles. The Pacers would also lose starting center Myles Turner during the 2025 offseason, as he left the Pacers to sign with the Milwaukee Bucks, ending his 10-year Pacers tenure. The 2025-2026 season was projected to be a gap year for the Pacers. The Pacers would perform poorly to begin the season and eventually began tanking in hopes of winning the 2026 NBA lottery. The Pacers would trade their 1 through 4 protected lottery pick along with key role players Benedict Mathurin and Isiah Jackson for starting center Ivica Zubac. The Pacers would get their starting center replacement, but their hope of keeping their protected lottery pick failed as the Pacers fell to number 5, allowing the Clippers to gain the pick. The Pacers will now aim to regain their magic from a year and a half ago. Tyrese Haliburton will return this fall to bring the Pacers back into contention. It's too early to predict their season, but they must bounce after experiencing their worst season in franchise history. The Orlando Magic enter the 2026-2027 season with a chance for redemption and improvement. The 2025-2026 season was an underachievement for the Magic as they would finish the season as the eighth seed in the NBA playoff picture. They would lose the first game of the 2026 NBA Play-In Tournament but bounced back in the season game against the Charlotte Hornets. The Magic would enter the first round of the playoffs against the 60-win 1-seeded Detroit Pistons. The Pistons were heavy favorites but found themselves down 3 wins to 1 against the Magic. The Magic, led by Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner and Desmond Bane, showed a lot of promise playing together in a small sample size. Wagner suffered a playoff-ending injury in game 4, and it would damage the Magic's chance of advancing to the semi-finals. The Magic would blow a 3-1 lead and lose in the first round for a third consecutive year. The Orlando Magic spent 2020 to 2023 rebuilding and have nothing to show for it. They lost in 7 games to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2024, followed by losing in 5 games to the Boston Celtics in 2025. The Magic could be looking at a roster shake-up if they do not gain any playoff success with their core of Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Desmond Bane, Jaylen Suggs and Wendell Carter Jr. A trade could be a strong possibility. Switching to the Western Conference, the Denver Nuggets enter the 2026-2027 season with the most pressure to win another championship in the Nikola Jokić era. The Nuggets entered the 2025-2026 season as the team to challenge the Oklahoma City Thunder as the team to beat in the Western Conference. They dealt with injuries throughout the season but finished as the third seed in a very competitive conference. They were a championship or bust contender as they entered the playoffs facing the 6th-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves. Both teams were not healthy in their first round series, but the Wolves were missing more significant players, as the Wolves upset the Nuggets while missing their star, Anthony Edwards, along with key role player Donte Divinenzo. The Nuggets were without key role players Aaron Gordon and Peyton Watson. The Nuggets struggle on offense was very noticeable as stars Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray completely underachieved against the Timberwolves defense. They lost in 6 games and enter the next season with the goal of a bounce-back playoff run. They were not expected to experience a first round exit and will look to regroup with the majority of the same group from last season. Since winning the NBA championship in 2023, the Nuggets have lost in the second round in back to back years in 2024 and 2025. Nikola Jokić becomes a free agent in 2028 and becomes extension eligible in 2027. The window to win Jokic era appears to be fading away as the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs dominate the Western Conference. Lastly, there's the Houston Rockets, who are facing the crossroads of a change in direction. They are coming off of a consecutive first round exit at the hands of the Los Angeles Lakers, who were missing stars Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves. The Rockets have underachieved in back-to-back playoff first rounds, with the 2026 first round loss being a major concern. The Rockets traded for future Hall of Famer Kevin Durrant during the 2025 offseason with the goal of winning a championship. They dealt with injuries during the 2025-2026 season but finished with a record of 52-30, the same record from their previous season. Kevin Durant was unable to stay healthy for the Rockets during their first round against the Lakers, as he appeared in just one of the six playoff games. All-Star Alperen Sengun was able to step up alongside key young players Ausar Thompson and Jabari Smith Jr. The Rockets will enter the new season with the goal of taking a leap in the standings while focusing on player development for their young core of players. Kevin Durant could be on his way out of Houston if the Rockets continue to underachieve. The trade has not aged well as fringe All-Star caliber players Dylan Brooks and Jalen Green have gained success in Phoenix following the Rockets-Suns trade. Another rebuild could be very possible for the Rockets if they do not take a leap towards success in the 2026-2027 season. So who has the most to gain or lose in the 2026-2027 season? Will these teams bounce back following their previous season’s disappointment? The NBA pre-season begins in early October and there will be a huge preview of where these contenders stand entering the next season.
