How can the New York Knicks repeat as champions in the 2026-2027 NBA season?
The NBA offseason has come and went as NBA media day and training camp approached. Nearly 3 months have passed since the last championship was won. From championship contenders to rebuilding lottery teams, the NBA saw changes around the league like no other. Many teams got better, including the Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers. The Sixers made the most headlines during the offseason with the additions of future Hall of Famer LeBron James, along with multi-all-star and 2024 NBA finals MVP Jaylen Brown. The Oklahoma City Thunder and the defending Western Conference Champion San Antonio Spurs continue to be in the conversation as the favorite to win the next championship in 2027. The conversations of the Spurs, Thunder and Sixers deserve a reminder of the defending NBA champion New York Knicks. The 2025-2026 Knicks championship run, which concluded with a 16-3 record, has arguably had them overlooked when discussing the upcoming 2026-2027 season. The Knicks are surely not underrated, but their dismissal of not being the team to beat needs a deep dive. The 2025-2026 New Knicks were not the dominant regular season team, finishing with 53 wins, but they played hard and dominated the games when they mattered most. Led by the 2026 NBA Finals MVP, Jalen Brunson enters the 2026-2027 season as a man on a mission very different from the previous year. Brunson’s goal of winning back-to-back championships. How he and his teammates can accomplish this goal is questionable but very possible. Finally, here is the break-down. The New York Knicks will open the 2026-2027 season at home against the new-look Philadelphia 76ers on October 22nd. The championship team will mostly be running back with the exclusion of backup big men Mitchell Robinson and Ariel Hukporti. The Knicks would add veteran back-up big man Andre Drummond as Mitchell Robonson’s replacement. Drummond, who is a downgrade from Robinson in his shot-blocking skill set, still carries a strong presence around the rim as a rebounder with a better skill set on offense. The Knicks will still need a third option center to fill the void in Hukporti’s absence. Whether it's a trade, or another free agent signing, a third-string center will be very important to the Knicks bench depth. Health was the most important factor of the New York Knicks championship run. The starting five remain relatively healthy aside from starting forward Og Anunoby missing two games in the second round. The Knicks must continue to keep their roster in good health as the next season begins. All-Stars Jalen Brunson and Karl Anthony Towns will carry a heavy load of the offense, but they will need as much help as they can get from the role players and reserves. A goal for the Knicks that would make a difference is developing a starting role player into an All-Star. That task is very possible, as last season, the 2025 defending NBA Champion Oklahoma City Thunder, turned starting center Chet Holgram from a role player to a first-time All-Star. The Knicks have the chance to do the same with role players with All-Star upside, such as Og Anunoby and Mikel Bridges. Establishing a third All-Star would make the Knicks much more dangerous when entering the 2027 NBA Players. The Eastern Conference has obviously gotten better, but why can’t the Knicks get better? The Knicks have arguably the most talent to get back to the NBA finals. Repeating will not be easy, as there have been no back-to-back champions since the 2017-2018 Golden State Warriors. It has been a long time since a champion has repeated and the Knick should not be counted out. The core of the Knicks starting five: Jalen Brunson, Karl Anthony Towns, Og Anunoby, Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges, enter the 2026-2027 season with an age range from 29 years to 31 years old. They are all in their prime years and have what it takes to win when the lights shine bright. So can the New York Knicks repeat as champions next season? Could they experience a championship hangover after a dominant 16-3 playoff run? The quest to repeat will be difficult, but for a team like the reigning championship Knicks, like when they overcame a 29-point deficit in the 2026 NBA Finals, they should not be counted out.
