How will the Los Angeles Clippers salary cap investigation results impact the team’s future?

The Los Angeles Clippers are under fire for quite possibly the largest investigative punishment ever handed down in NBA league history. One year ago, the Clippers were suspected of violating NBA salary cap rules. The Clippers were believed to have completed an embezzlement to future Hall of Famer Kawhi Leonard. An accusation, originally made by journalist, Pablo Tore, accused the Clippers of paying Kawhi Leonard additional money through a company named Aspiration. Clippers billionaire owner Steve Ballmer accepted the investigation and claimed he and the franchise had nothing to hide. One year later, that is far from the truth and the franchise's future looks murkier by the day. To analyze the result and aftermath of the investigation, it is time to look back at where the clippers were one year ago compared to now. The Clippers entered the 2025-2026 season coming off of an intense 7-game first round series against the Denver Nuggets. The Clippers, led by All-Stars Kawhi Leonard and James Harden, strived for redemption and a chance to lead the Clippers to their first championship in franchise history. The Clippers began the season with a poor 6-21 record in their first 27 games. A lost year was looking like the outcome. The Clippers would overcome a season-worst 15 games under .500 and get back to .500 just before the trade deadline. The playoffs looked promising. Two unexpected trades would change the Clippers' season and future prior to the investigation results. The Clippers would trade future Hall of Famer James Harden to the Cleveland Cavaliers for former All-Star Darius Garland. They would also trade starting center Ivicia Zubac to the Indiana Pacers for role players Benedict Mathurin and Isiah Jackson, along with two first round picks. The 2026 Pacers first round pick would be conveyed to the Clippers, as the Pacers fell in the 2026 NBA lottery, resulting in Keaton Wagler as the Clippers' lottery pick. The Clippers would lose to the Golden State Warriors in the 2026 Play-In Tournament, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2022. The Clippers begin the 2026 NBA offseason by making a blockbuster trade with the Toronto Raptors. The Clippers would trade long-time face of the franchise and future Hall of Famer Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors for former All-star Brandon Ingram, role player Grady Dick, and two future first round picks. It was clear the Clippers were entering a soft rebuild. Building around former All-Stars Darius Garland and Brandon Ingram. Fast-forward to September, and the Clippers are now set to face the largest penalties after being found guilty by the NBA in embezzling funds to Kawhi Leonard. The Clippers were fined 30 million dollars, along with the removal of 5 first round draft picks. Several members of the Clippers front office were given a one-year suspension along the owner Steve Ballmer. In the short term, the Clippers will still be able to compete for the playoffs, but how they build will be a problem. The Clippers' offseason includes the additions of Brandon Ingram, Grady Dick, and Max Straus, along with free agent signings Raui Hachimura and Bradley Beal. The roster will still be competitive, but the champion aspirations are long gone. Building their future rosters without their own draft picks will be very difficult. The Clippers can no longer tank during the late 2020s or early 2030s as a result of this investigation. Tanking serves no point for the Clippers as they no longer owned their own draft picks from 2029 to 2033. The Clippers play in Los Angeles, a destination that often attracts free agents and sold-out crowds. They could suffer in this aftermath or overcome this scandal slowly. So how will the salary cap investigation results impact the Clippers' future? Can they still compete in a dominant Western Conference? The Clippers have gone through fire in the last 7 years. They have lost 10 total draft picks from the Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for Paul George trade to the Kawhi Leonard salary cap investigation scandal. This is just another loss and challenge the Clippers must overcome again.
