What could the Eastern and Western Conference standings look like in the 2026-2027 NBA season?
The NBA 2026 pre-season has come to a close and the regular season begins in the coming days. The Eastern and Western Conference standings often fluctuate from year to year. Contenders don't always stay at the top while rebuilding eventually rises in the process. The 2026-2027 NBA season could be no exception as the standings for both conferences could truly be unpredictable. With all of this said, it is time to analyze and predict the overall standings for both conferences entering the new season. There are four tiers when dividing all 30 teams into a break-down. These tiers include Lottery, Play-In, Playoffs and Championship or Bust. Beginning with the Eastern Conference is the likely lottery teams. These lottery teams include the Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, Charlotte Hornets and Washington Wizards. While both the Nets and Bucks don't own their own draft picks, they are both built with the lowest amount of NBA-ready talent and are in the very early stages of their rebuilds. The Bulls, Hornets and Wizards are rebuilding teams like the Nets and Bucks but built with slightly more depth with established former stars and veterans. The Nets, Bucks and Bulls each have one former All-star who could be a trade candidate at the deadline, including Julius Randle, Tyler Herro and Norman Powell. The Hornets, who made the Play-In tournament last season, face a strong possibility of taking a step backwards after trading star point guard Lamelo Ball during the 2026 offseason. Out of the five teams mentioned, the Wizards have the best chance of changing the narrative, as they will be led by former All-stars Trae Young and Anthony Davis, along with the 2026 number 1 pick and rookie of the year candidate AJ Dybansta. Next there's the Play-in tournament hopefuls. These teams include the Orlando Magic, Atlanta Hawks, Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers. Both the Magic and Hawks made the playoffs last season but lacked major moves during the 2026 offseason. They are essentially running back teams that lost in the first round without much improvement. The Heat and Pacers missed last year's playoffs. The Heat responded by making a blockbuster trade for future Hall of Famer Giannis Antetokounmpo, along with key role players added as depth. The Pacers will see the return of face of the franchise Tyrese Halliburton, who missed all of last season recovering from a torn achilles. Next there is the established Playoffs team, which includes the Toronto Raptors, Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers. The Raptors raised their playoff ceiling by reuniting with future Hall of Famer and 2019 champion, Kawhi Leonard. The Pistons are running back majority of a 60-win team. The Celtics and Cavs remain elite in a stacked conference with several key players returning. The Celtics will now pair former star Paul George alongside champion Jayson Tatum, who played just 16 games last season returning from injury. The Cavaliers added Peyton Watson during the 2026 offseason, who could help improve the Cavs defense and production as a new starter. Lastly, in the Eastern Conference for the two championship or bust teams. The Philadelphia 76ers' defending champion New York Knicks fit the description. The Knicks are running back nearly their entire championship roster minus backup center Mitchell Robinson, who is now a part of the Boston Celtics. The Sixers traded former star Paul George for 2024 champion and finals MVP Jaylen Brown during the 2026 offseason. Their offseason was capped off with the addition of future Hall of Famer and arguably the face of the NBA, LeBron James. The battle for the East could come down to the Knicks and 76ers, as they will face off on October 20th, Opening Night. Shifting now to the Western Conference. The projected lottery teams out west include the Sacramento Kings, Memphis Grizzlies, New Orleans Pelicans, Golden State Warriors and Los Angles Clippers. The Kings and Grizzlies are still in the very early stages of their rebuilds and the playoffs are not on their playing cards for 2027. The Pelicans are stuck in the middle between young rebuilding talent and veterans who have yet to take them back into the playoffs after back-to-back seasons. Both the Warriors and Clippers made the Play-in tournament last season but saw their rosters get progressively worse during the 2026 NBA offseason. The Clippers' departure of Kawhi Leonard was the last domino, signaling a new and unpredictable era. The Warriors are hopeful of seeing a return of former All-Star Jimmy Butler mid-season, but no timeline of his return or Kristaps Porziņģis is a major concern. Next there is the Play-in tournament hopefuls, which include the Utah Jazz, Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, and Portland Trail Blazers. The Jazz look to take a major leap with the addition of the 2026 number 2 pick, Darryn Peterson. The Suns kept the majority of their 2026 playoff team intact with the addition of former Charlotte Hornet, Miles Brides. The Mavericks and Blazers will have the return of former All-stars Kyrie Irving and Damien Lillard. Both teams are looking together back to their playoff glory days. The established Playoff Western teams will include the Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves. All four teams look to take major steps during this upcoming season. The Timberwolves improved the most with the new pairing of All-star guard Anthony Edwards and Lamelo Ball. The new-look Lakers will aim for playoff success, now led by Luka Dončić and Austin Reeves as the new dynamic duo following the departure of LeBron James. The Nuggets hope for better health as a fully healthy Aaron Gordon playing alongside All-stars Nicola Jokic and Jamal Murray makes a difference. The Rockets will see the return of former All-star Fed VanVleet as the veteran point guard. VanVleet's return to playing alongside future Hall of Famer, Kevin Durant and All-star Alperen Şengün could give Houston a spike in the team's offense. Lastly, the two championship or bust teams could not be any more obvious, as the West will run through the San Antonio Spurs and the Oklahoma City Thunder. Both teams are arguably the best two teams entering the new season, led by their MVP candidates, Victor Wembanyama and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The Spurs look to win their first championship since 2014 after losing in last year's NBA finals to the New York Knicks in 5 games. The Thunder look to avenge last season's conference finals loss to the Spurs, and win their second championship in three seasons. So what could the finals results of each conference look like? Will there be any major surprises in the NBA standings during the 2026-2027 season? The funnest part about predictions is seeing how good or poor these predictions look in hindsight. Whether these projected predictions are wrong or right, the hype around the newest NBA season could not be any higher.
