Which rookie has the best chance to win the rookie of the year in the 2026-2027 NBA season?

The 2026 NBA pre-season is nearing completion as all 30 teams prep for opening week. There are many storylines to follow during the 2026-2027 season, including star players on new teams, the return of injured former stars and the debut of the 2026 NBA Draft class. Predicting the rookie of the year is always an interesting discussion because it analyzes former college basketball stars who have yet to suit up for their first NBA teams. The 2026 NBA Draft class has the potential to be one of the greatest draft classes in recent memory, as several of the top draft picks have a case to win the rookie of the year award. While the 2026–2027 season has yet to begin, it is time to analyze the 2026 draft class and what could be expected from many of these rookies entering the new season. Each rookie is in their own unique situation based on the team that drafted them. Many of these rookies will lead or make an impact on rebuilding teams, while others may play key roles off the bench for contending teams. Not every rookie will have the same shot diet as others. The green light to shoot will be on for several rookies but may vary based on a team's ceiling for contention. Starting with the number 1 draft pick AJ Dybansta of the Washington Wizards. Dybansta enters a Wizards team looking to make the NBA playoffs for the first time since 2021. He will go into the new season playing alongside former All-stars Trae Young and Anthony Davis. Young and Davis will have the opportunity to mentor Dybansta and guide him through his rookie season as a top scoring option. Dybansta will most likely not be the Wizards number 1 scoring option due to the scoring presence of Antony Davis and Trae Young, but he will get plenty of opportunities to leave his impact on the game. The same could be said about the number 2 draft pick, Darryn Peterson of the Utah Jazz. Peterson, just like Dybansta, enters a Jazz team with the same goal of getting back into the playoffs. The Utah Jazz have not made the playoffs since the 2021-2022 season and look to take a lead after several years at the bottom of the Western Conference Standings. Peterson will join former All-stars Jaren Jackson Jr. and Lauri Markkanen as top scoring options for a resurgent Jazz team. Peterson may have a higher green light to shoot for the Jazz, but it will definitely come down to the health and the availability of Jackson Jr. and Markkanen. Peterson has a good chance to be a second scoring option if Markkanen returns to his 2023 All-star form. Next there's the number 3 draft pick, Cameron Boozer of the Memphis Grizzles. Boozer has arguably the best chance to win the rookie of the year award due to where the Grizzles stand in the Western Conference. The Grizzlies enter the 2026-2027 season in a new era. Gone are former All-stars Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr., and here comes Cameron Boozer. Boozer will be penciled in as the Grizzlies number 1 scoring option following the offseason trade of Ja Morant. The Grizzlies lack a former All-star and will focus on the growth and development of Boozer. The Grizzlies missed the playoffs last season and while making the playoffs this season is not expected, Boozer's first step towards NBA stardom will easily be a focal point. Lastly, there is the number 4 draft pick, Caleb Wilson of the Chicago Bulls. Wilson enters the 2026-2027 season as having the most promise as the last of the four top draft picks in the 2026 draft class. Wilson will join newcomer and former All-star Norman Powell, as the Bulls aim to take a leap in their current rebuild. The Bulls have not made the playoffs since 2022 and while the playoffs don't look high for the Bulls, they can still show signs of improvement in their rebuilding next stage. Wilson will likely have the green light to shoot in every game, as the Bulls hope to see him develop into becoming their number 1 scoring option. He will likely begin the season as the Bulls' second option, as newly joined Norman Powell will enter as the veteran leader. So who will have the best chance to win the rookie of the year award? Can these four top draft picks live up to the exceptions they set while playing in college? The 2026-2027 season will be filled with many intriguing storylines. The battle for rookie of the year could go down to the wire and make this new season a very special one to remember.
